Practice What I Preach

This is an image of a child on a swing.

I took my grandson to the park. While there I did a little practice of the 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique I wrote about a few days ago. I know I need to practice what I preach. It is much easier telling everyone else how to feel better than applying it to my life.

We were the only ones at the park. It was quiet. I took the time to really notice my 5 senses. It felt great practicing the grounding technique I previously shared.

Sight

I looked at the trees surrounding the park, the white stripe left in the sky after an airplane passed overhead, and my grandson’s tiny hands holding tightly to the chains of the swing. I saw people walking their dogs and birds flying from tree to tree.

Touch

I felt the touch of the swing as I pushed it forward, my feet on the spongy rubber covering the ground, the wind blowing my hair into my face and the chill of the zipper on my jacket.

Sound

I heard birds chirping, construction vehicles backing up, and my grandson’s little voice saying, “higher, higher!”

Smell

I smelled the dust being blown about in the wind and the mustiness of my jacket that had not been worn for a while.

Taste

I tasted the waffles I had for breakfast and realized I had forgotten to brush my teeth before leaving the house.

Practice What I Preach Worked

I realized how good it felt to ground myself in this way. Imagine this…practice what I preach really worked! I thoroughly enjoyed using my senses to live in the moment with my grandson. I challenge you to give this a try for a few minutes this week. Please tell me about your experience.

Thanks, again, for stopping by!
